The new world is here

Well I'm back blogging yet again! I qualified as a Library Technician in 1991 the year my second child was born. Since then I have seen the internet become available whilst working at the State Reference Library in Tasmania from 1989-1997. I often used to look at customers using it and think I must learn how to use it! But working part-time and having two young children prevented me from having the time. When my youngest started school just three years ago I started doing volunteer work ina school library and could see then how much PCs were now being used compared to when I worked in libraries before and also during my studies. I then did a Certificate 2 in Information Technology at Chisholm TAFE in 2005 and my eyes were opened!

Our webpage gives patrons access to so much more than was ever before available in terms of our databases and even the fact that we are now linked to other libraries through Swift. We have next reads and soon emails or texts to tell patrons when their holds have arrived. There is so much we can do now!

library2.0

In the time that I have been involved in libraries I have seen the changes. I first started working in libraries in 1983, quailified as a library technician in 1991, took some time off with family commitments from 1997-2003 then in 2004 started volunteering in a school library when the youngest started school. In 2005 I studied computers at TAFE to add to my Lib tech skills as I could see computers had become a vital part of libraries and now I am at cclc as a Hamster!

technorati

mm interesting stuff yet again but oh for the time to truly discover! This site is like magazine of popular interesting stuff but for all different ages and interests. There is a blog for all interests! You can go from one blog to another which just adds to my idea that computers are indeed the world greatest timewasters....

del.icio.us

mm interesting as always wish I could have more time to just play with this more but found a site via del.icio.us (with Laura's help) that had a marvellous array of storytime assistance. I had a good wander around there and found songs, book suggestions, craft ideas, "fingerplays" and so on. I already copied off soem stuff for the new kit that I am making! This particular site had been tagged by a good number of people so I had therefore thoguht that it must be good and it was!

Rollyo

Well I made a rollyo for Aussie native plants. I was then able to look up a specific native plant name using the sites I had nominated as good sites and got some information on that plant. Pretty handy really. I actually made a search called "aust native plants" and then realised i was supposed to actually register first so there is a second one titled "aussie native plants".

Flickr and "mashups"

I found a place where you can make postcards and send to a friend - something individual. You add a picture either from the site or your own and add some text and add your email and your fiends and bobs your uncle! Of course you can also keep your own photos on the site for friends to access without having to email them!

Well this was fun. I wish I had more time to muck around with this. I can see this could be fun for birthdays and even for making up signs in the library and so on ...
